There is no greater reward than harvesting fruit from your very own yard. Golden Plains has a large selection of apple, cherry, apricot, plum and pear trees which are cold hardy for our climate. Growing fruit is a great way to green up your yard, save money at the grocery store, and reap the health benefits of those tasty summer treats.

Apple

The key to successfully growing apples is to pick the right spot. All apples do best in full sun and moist, well-drained soil. Although the trees thrive in a wide variety of soils, avoid planting them in low or wet spots - they don't grow well in situations where there's standing water for extended periods.

Cross Pollination required - plant a second different variety of Apple, Crab Apple or Ornamental Apple

Apricot

You will want to plant your apricot tree in a location that gets a full day’s sun, and has very well-draining soil. You should allow for about 25' around your tree for growth. Right after planting, you should trim back your tree to encourage new growth. A more open-growing tree will allow more light to all the branches, which will benefit your future fruit production.

Cherry

Cherry shrubs are a sight to behold in the spring, when they’re covered in white or pink blossoms. After that, they produce the delicious cherries that most people know and love. To grow your cherries, it's best to choose a warm sheltered site, or grow against a south- or south-west facing wall or fence. When frost is forecast, protect the blossom, but uncover it during the day to allow access to pollinating insects.

Pear

Pears require full sun. Be sure to choose a spot that will ensure at least 6-8 hours of sun, not only for your sapling but for your full grown pear.  Dig your hole wide and deep, mixing mix plenty of compost into the soil. Remove the tree from its container and set it in the hole to the same depth it was in its container. Gently spread the roots and refill the hole with the amended soil. Water well and continue to water regularly – once or twice a week – until the roots are well established.

Cross Pollination Required - Plant a second different variety of Pear

Plum

Plums do best in rich, moist but well-drained loam or clay loam in full sun. To create a solid, productive tree, prune out weaker branches and lightly cut back a few stronger ones in spring for the first few years. This will force branches to grow in girth rather than length and to form a solid trunk. After two or three years, the tree should be well formed; after that, simply remove water sprouts, cut back overly vigorous leaders or branches, and thin out weak or crowded growth to ensure good air circulation.

Cross Pollination Required - Plant a second different variety of Plum
