Argyranthemum

Argyranthemums, or marguerite daisies, are excellent garden plants popular for their delicate showy nature and iconic daisy-like flowers. They make a nice addition to flower beds, borders or as a containers while attracting butterflies and pollinators. For optimal blooms and healthy plants, the argyranthemums growing conditions tend towards favoring cooler temperature. The blooms are fullest in the early fall and late spring months.

Butterfly

Bacopa

The delicate pastel flowers and finely textured foliage of bacopa plants belie its tough nature. This blooming workhorse provides summer-long colour with very little effort. Whether used as a cascading accent in a hanging basket or a sprawling ground cover in the landscape, bacopa combines well with other plants and is virtually carefree, making it a versatile choice for home gardeners.

Begonia

Talk about foolproof: begonias are about as easy as they get. They do well in a variety of conditions, but to keep it its most luxuriant best, give it light shade; rich, well-drained soil; and ample water. It also loves plenty of fertilizer, so be generous. Plant begonias in spring after all danger of frost has passed. No need to deadhead this flower unless you want to, it's "self-cleaning!"

Calibrachoa

While Calibrachoa may be a fairly new species, this dazzling little plant is a must-have in the garden. Its trailing habit makes it perfect for use in hanging baskets, containers or as a small area ground cover. Calibrachoa produces mounds of foliage, growing only 6-12" tall, along trailing stems and flowers in shades of violet, blue, pink, red, magenta, yellow, bronze and white. They are prolific bloomers from spring to frost.

Celosia

There are few flowers as showy as celosia. Whether you plant the plumed type, which produces striking upright spires, or the crested type, which has a fascinating twisted form, you'll love using celosia in bouquets. The flowers are beautiful fresh, but you can also dry them easily. And they bloom in all the colours of a glowing sunset.

Cuphea

Are you tired of planting the same humdrum mix of annuals in your garden beds and containers year after year? If so, cuphea is just what you need to break out of your rut and rev up your summer colour palette. Cuphea is gaining widespread appeal because of its outrageous array of flower colours and profiles. Although the flowers are small, they are abundant, and their vivid colours and sweet nectar make them absolutely irresistible to hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators. Cuphea loves summer sun and heat and it will bloom nonstop until the first frost.

Dianthus

This large family of sun-loving, easy-care bloomers includes compact forms as well as and taller forms. All dianthus have pretty blue-green foliage that looks terrific paired with their deliciously fragrant pink, white, rose, yellow, red, or bi-colored flowers. Butterflies love the nectar-rich blooms, too. Use in mixed containers or plant them in drifts or clumps in your flower border or rock garden. Dianthus is also deer resistant.

Diascia

Diascia is a delicate, frothy type of plant. Some varieties will spill over pots, and others tend to grow more upright as it's a relative of the snapdragon.
Diascia repeat blooms throughout the summer, although it performs best in the cool weather of spring and fall. If your plants start to look leggy or spent, shear them back by half and they will soon start blooming all over again. Best used in containers and hanging baskets.

Dusty Miller

The dusty miller plant is an interesting landscape addition, grown for its silvery gray foliage. The lacy leaves are attractive companions for many blooms in the garden. Dusty miller care is minimal when the plant is established. As with most silvery, furry plants, growing dusty miller helps the garden remain attractive through the heat of the summer. Dusty miller can handle the heat, but is best planted where afternoon shade is available during the hottest months of summer.

Euphorbia

Euphorbia plants look like frothy clusters of airy flowers and tiny leaves. You may mistake euphorbia for traditional baby's breath, but these wispy, mounding plants are quite different. They're drought-tolerant, need no deadheading, are deer resistant, and bloom pretty much continually throughout the late spring, summer, and fall. The plant is native to North America and grows quickly, featuring frothy white flowers held above narrow, delicate leaves.

Fuchsia

Beautiful, delicate fuchsias come in thousands of varieties and colours, with multi-coloured blossoms that hang and droop beautifully from baskets, planters, and pots. Often trellised in the garden, fuchsia plants can be bushy or vining and trailing. Fuchsias love lots of filtered light but are particularly intolerant of heat. Make sure your fuchsia baskets or planters have plenty of dappled shade and daytime temperatures well below 27°C will encourage a healthy bloom.

Pansy - Trailing

To ensure continuous blooming during our hot summers, these plants prefer to be kept out of the intense afternoon sun.

Pericallis

Pericallis, sometimes called florists’ cineraria, bears a mass of showy flowers, each 1-2" across, grouped into a tight, flattish, or slightly domed head that nearly hides the foliage. Flower petals can be blue, maroon, pink, purple, red, or white; they surround a dark center which can be any of these colours. Pericallis prefers cool weather and is often preferred to be used in containers.

Petunia

Growing petunias can offer long term colour in the summer landscape and brighten dreary borders with lovely jewel-tone and pastel colours. Caring for petunias is easy whether in a garden bed or a container. Regular watering and as much sunlight as possible to promote multiple blooms is about all it takes. While petunias will grow in a partially shaded location, a fuller and more abundant bloom is produced in full sun.

Salvia

There are few gardens that don't have at least one salvia growing in them. Whether you have sun or shade, a dry garden or lots of rainfall, there's an annual salvia that you'll find indispensable. All attract hummingbirds, especially the red ones, and are great picks for hot, dry sites where you want tons of color all season. Most salvias don't like cool weather, so plant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

Sanvitalia

Sanvitalia, also known as creeping zinnia, is a low growing (6-8"), spreading groundcover plant that is excellent for borders or rock gardens. They can also be grown in planters or hanging baskets. Sanvitalia produce hundreds of dark centred, bright yellow, 0.75-1" flowers beginning in early summer and lasting until the first frosts of fall. Pairs beautifully with gazanias, verbena and portulaca. No deadheading required.
