About Us
We are 2 generation family business with the 3rd generation in training! We are extremely proud of the flowers and plants we provide you with.
Golden Plains Greenhouse & Garden Center started back in 2002. We took over a small existing greenhouse operation and brought in a livestock feed and horse tack business which we then combined into Golden Plains. In the beginning, it was just Shelly who worked and operated the business which included wholesale growing of flowers which were sold to local businesses.
Over the years, we have expanded, adding more greenhouse space, with the biggest change happening in 2006 when we built the giant selling house. The next big change was in 2010 when we added our veggie house, which is now currently our annual house.
Shelly (Owner & Horticulturist)
Shelly was born in England where her family owned a fruit and flower shop. They supplied their own cucumbers, tomatoes and flowers to sell through their own commercial, glass greenhouses. Here it was where Shelly and Robert (Shelly’s dad), first seeded, transplanted and grew flowers and vegetables. Also involved was Shirley (Shelly's mom), who was a florist, she made up the bouquets from the flowers grown in their cut flower field (a fun fact is that they have made up flower bouquets for the royal family!). Shelly has degrees in horticulture, floristry and landscaping. You will see her in the greenhouse at the till in the evenings & weekends as well as her usual 2 week holidays. In Shelly's down time you will find her working on one of her many projects either in the yard, garden or house.
Vicki (Owner & Manager/Grower)
Vicki is Shelly's daughter and 2nd generation in the greenhouse. Her main role is the day-to-day running of the greenhouse. She is the one that does all the ordering of plants, seeds & products. Her specialty is making all the hanging basket & container mixes herself as none of their pots are made using premade plug mixes which is something that sets our mixes above the rest. She really enjoys when you stop to ask her to help you design your own! In Vicki's down time you can find her fishing with her boys, working on her yard or crafting.
Dustin (Soil, Yard Maintenance & Delivery)
Dustin is Shelly's son-in-law, married to her daughter Vicki. Dustin has been with the greenhouse since he started dating Vicki. He started with transplanting in the greenhouse and has since got “promoted” to making our famous Golden Plains Soil Mix. You will find him out on the tractor or in the garage making up our soil mix. He truly is a social butterfly and often has customers talking to him. He also manages all our deliveries we do.
Griffin (Apprentice in Training)
Griffin is Shelly's grandson and son to Vicki and Dustin, which makes him the 3rd generation in the greenhouse. Since he's been a baby he has been included. Since he’s been 2 his job every year is looking after our hen & chick plants, which he called his hens & chickys. Over the years you might have seen him having his picnic on the table visiting Mom & Nan after daycare or perhaps giving you your receipt and change. Who know what this year will bring!
We look forward to seeing you in our greenhouses!
