Ageratum

Ageratum, or "floss flower" is such a little workhorse that nearly every garden should have some. This annual is an easy-to-grow, old-fashioned favorite that produces a steady show of colorful powder-puff-like flowers from late spring through frost. It's also rarely bothered by pests, so you count on it to look good. Plus, it provides some of the truest blues you can find in flowers.

Alyssum

Alyssum, or as it's also called, sweet alison with its dainty, fragrant flowers, is often used in containers and hanging baskets to spill over the edges, creating a soft, frothy look. It's also a great edging plant because of its tidy, compact habit. Regardless of how you use it,  alyssum does best in spring and fall's cool conditions.

Begonia

Talk about foolproof: begonias are about as easy as they get. They do well in a variety of conditions, but to keep it its most luxuriant best, give it light shade; rich, well-drained soil; and ample water. It also loves plenty of fertilizer, so be generous. Plant begonias in spring after all danger of frost has passed. No need to deadhead this flower unless you want to, it's "self-cleaning!"

Calendula

Bright yellow and orange flowers, historically used for medicinal and culinary purposes, come from easy calendula care when growing this simple flower. Commonly called the pot marigold, the calendula flower has long been a staple in British cottage gardens. Petals are used in cooking, and were used as yellow coloring in cheeses and butters in centuries past. While uses of calendula plants are diverse, growing calendula in the flower or herb garden is an optimum use of this attractive plant. Calendula plants are frost tolerant and somewhat cold hardy and add long-lasting colour and beauty in a flower bed or container.

Celosia

There are few flowers as showy as celosia. Whether you plant the plumed type, which produces striking upright spires, or the crested type, which has a fascinating twisted form, you'll love using celosia in bouquets. The flowers are beautiful fresh, but you can also dry them easily. And they bloom in all the colours of a glowing sunset.

Cosmos

Cosmos are prized for their abundant, silky, daisy-like flowers and their unflappable, easy-care nature in the garden. Plant them in full sun and give them protection from strong winds. Cosmos tolerates a wide range of soil types, including poor soil. Plants need even moisture to get started, but mature cosmos are drought tolerant; plants produce more and larger flowers, however, if they are watered regularly.

Dahlia

Dahlias are hugely varietal flowers, with little starburst blooms to plate sized flowers in every hue imaginable. Dahlias are relatively sturdy plants if grown in the right lighting, heat, and soil. Dahlias need to be kept weed free. Use organic mulch around the plants to prevent weeds and conserve moisture. Pinch back the terminal buds when the plant is 15" tall to enforce good branching and structure and increase budding. Provide plenty of water to your plants. Water plants deeply once or twice per week.

Dusty Miller

The dusty miller plant is an interesting landscape addition, grown for its silvery gray foliage. The lacy leaves are attractive companions for many blooms in the garden. Dusty miller care is minimal when the plant is established. As with most silvery, furry plants, growing dusty miller helps the garden remain attractive through the heat of the summer. Dusty miller can handle the heat, but is best planted where afternoon shade is available during the hottest months of summer.

Gomphrena is a cheery little clover look-alike that for centuries has graced classic cutting gardens as it blooms from early summer until the first hard frost. Somewhat short in stature, it is frequently seen in the front of the border. For best results, pinch back blooms on young plants to encourage a bushier habit and increased flowering.

Gypsophila

From bridal bouquets to flower beds, gypsophila can decorate each in it's own graceful way. In the flower bed, on a big scale gypsophila can grow in bare areas and can be combined with almost every other kind of flower. Gypsophila foremost prefers a sandy and warm ground. It is important that it contains chalk and is rather permeable. Warmth poses an important factor for flourishing, this is why gypsophila often grows in cracks or in stony, dry regions. It's important to plant gyposphila in a wind protected place, so the plant does not get damaged by strong winds.

Lobelia

Lobelia is a compact and reliable annual to add some bright splashes of colour throughout the garden, even in the cool or shady spots. It flowers in nonstop waves of brilliant blues, pinks, purples, and white all summer long, and has pretty, dainty foliage. This plant is notable for having two different growth habits available, and gives wonderful versatility in the garden or containers. Compact varieties with an upright growth habit are a natural for edging or as fillers in flower beds. And the trailing varieties have a lush, spreading habit that are superb cascading out of containers, hanging baskets, and window boxes – or spilling over rockeries and retaining walls.

Marigold - African

No annual is more cheerful or easier to grow than the marigold. These flowers are the spendthrifts among annuals, bringing a wealth of gold, copper, and brass into our summer and autumn gardens. African marigolds are taller and more tolerant of hot, dry conditions than French marigolds. They also have larger flowers that can be up to 6" in diameter. If deadheaded regularly, African marigold plants will usually produce many large blooms. They grow best in full sun and actually seem to prefer poor soil.

Just as you'd expect from something called French, these marigolds are the fancy ones. French marigolds tend to be frilly and some boast a distinctive "crested eye." They grow roughly 8-12" high with a chic, neat, little growth habit and elegant dark green foliage. They do best in full sun with moist, well-drained soil and will flower all summer long.

Mesembryanthemum

Mesembryanthemums are a group of flowering succulents. Their fleshy leaves, unique shapes and colours, and low maintenance requirements make them a great choice for gardens and containers. They are considered succulents because of their fleshy leaves that hold a lot of water, like cactus. They are also called ice plants because the leaves in this particular genus are often shiny and glistening, like ice. Not only do the Mesembryanthemums have interesting and attractive foliage, they also have pretty flowers. In spring or summer, they will bloom with colourful, daisy-like flowers in red, yellow, white, pink, and other colours. Mesembryanthemum flowers can be clustered or single and tend to be long lasting.

Pansy

Pansies are noted for their large multi-coloured flat flowers and their fondness cool temperatures. The gardener knows pansies as flowers with almost heart-shaped, overlapping petals in bright colours or bi-colours, often with face-like center markings. Compact, low growers, pansies are ideal for edging and for squeezing in between rock walls and paths, as long as they can be removed in summer. They’re a great choice for early and late season containers, and in the garden they complement spring-flowering bulbs, flowering as the bulb foliage begins to fade.

All attract hummingbirds, especially the red ones, and are great picks for hot, dry sites where you want tons of color all season. Most salvias don't like cool weather, so plant them outdoors after all danger of frost has passed.

Snapdragon

Growing snapdragons in the flower bed provides cool season colour and a mid-sized plant to balance tall background plants and shorter bedding plants in the front. After planting snapdragons in a full sun location with well-draining soil, snapdragon care should include a few well-placed clips to manipulate this plant into a bushy, filled-out specimen. Clip the top stem and any long side shoots to encourage more flowers and more attractive planting.
