Hardy Ferns are extremely forgiving and have an incredibly strong survival instinct. They will grow where other plants fail to thrive and do best in moist, shady locations with soil high in organic matter. Their varied forms, sizes and textures add interest to the garden. Ferns make excellent companions for woodland plantings like Hosta, Columbine, Liriope and Caladiums.
Matteuccia Struthiopteris, or Ostrich Fern, has large, lustrous, dark green fronds that arch gracefully and give the tropical feel of a palm. Happiest in a cool moist site, it will tolerate more sun at the side of a stream or pond.
